MasterMap - Services and Solutions for AutoCAD and MapGuide
The Management of Ordnance Survey MasterMap Data in AutoCAD and MapGuide Requires a New Non-DWG, File-Free Based Approach to
Translation and Delivery
In 2001 the Ordnance Survey launched MasterMap. Derived from the OS master topographic database
it is the definitive polygonised representation of Great Britain. MasterMap will replace the
existing large-scales products (Land-Line etc).
Traditional Solutions Traditional solutions for managing OS Data are based on data translation to CAD formats. For
example, Land-Line NTF was supplied in small geographic areas suitable for DWG translation. In addition, data
updates were supplied as replacement files making the data suitable for batch conversion.
MasterMap is Different
MasterMap is not suited to traditional data translation (DWG) processes for three reasons:
Supply Size: MasterMap is delivered as zipped (.gz) GML files. A typical GML file is several hundred MB and unsuitable for clipping to CAD formats
Supply Area: MasterMap delivery chunks are very large and irregular
Update Supply: MasterMap updates are supplied as change only files detailing the small volume of newly changed or deleted items
CAD systems and the DWG format are not suitable for managing large volumes of changing data
Enterprise Solutions
IME are the only company in the UK to offer scaleable solutions for managing MasterMap data
within the AutoCAD environment. To achieve this, we translate the MasterMap data supply
into a spatial database and then use an OpenGIS compliant server-client extension
to deliver the data to CAD on demand. Databases are suitable for holding and managing
MasterMap data due to their saleability and searching and filtering capabilities. Bulk data
loading and change-only-update are also handled efficiently with large datasets.
“We've worked with IME developing our Property Systems for over 10 years now and, quite frankly, it's hard to imagine working with any other company. Excellent technical knowledge and customer support.”
